Colin Farrell, Johnny Connolly, and Cary Novotny bring their high-energy brand of traditional and modern Irish music to you this fall!
The trio, a hit at the 2024 Spanish Peaks International Celtic Music Festival in Colorado, features the acclaimed virtuosic fiddler player, Colin Farrell, a member of the legendary traditional Irish supergroup, Lunasa, acclaimed accordionist Johnny Connolly of Solas fame and West Coast-based guitarist, Cary Novotny, whose propelling rhythms and inventive harmonies have laid the foundation for many renowned Irish, folk, and country artists.
Born in Manchester, England, into a very musical family to parents from County Galway and County Cavan, Colin Farrell started playing the fiddle and tin whistle from an early age and won numerous titles at the Fleadh Cheoil. He began playing with St. Malachy's Ceili Band when he was 12 years old and was a founding member of the band Ceile, with whom he recorded the album Mancunian Way. Since then, he has made a name for himself performing and recording with an array of great musicians in Europe and the US, including such groups as Flook, Grada, Karen Casey, John Doyle, Tim OBrien, The Elders, Julie Fowlis, The Michael McGoldrick Band and is currently playing with the band Lunasa. Colin has also played and recorded with numerous dance shows such as Spirit of Ireland, Dance of Desire, and Magical Rhythms of Ireland. Colin is also a composer whose tunes have been played and recorded by numerous bands and musicians.
Johnny Connolly was born and raised in Dublin, Ireland, and mastered the button accordion at an early age. His first solo recording with Green Linnet Records, released in 2001, was entitled Bridgetown, named after his adopted hometown, Portland, Oregon. Over the last two decades, Johnny has toured extensively nationally and internationally, performing with many high-profile acts in the Irish music world, including Kevin Burke, Lisa Ornstein, Bridgetown, The Chieftains, Casey Neill, Nuala Kennedy, and the Celtic Legends touring music and dance show. Most recently, Johnny was a touring member of the internationally acclaimed and legendary Irish band Solas and is featured on their last CD, All These Years.
Cary Novotny was born in South Dakota and later moved to Bowling Green, Kentucky, where he began studying classical guitar and learning the music of the region, namely country, folk, and bluegrass music. After moving to the Northwest, Novotny earned a Bachelor of Music degree at the University of Portland and then began a career as a professional guitarist, singer, and songwriter in the folk and popular music scene in the Portland and Seattle areas. In 1995, Novotny cofounded Cul an Ti, which became a household name over the next 20 years in the Northwest with its hundreds of performances of lively traditional Irish tunes and its unique blend of Irish and popular songs. Novotny continues to maintain a busy schedule as a guitarist in the world of Celtic music and has recorded and performed with many other notable Irish musicians, including Kevin Burke, Winifred Horan, The Bridies, Johnny Connolly, Hanz Araki, Colleen Raney, Andrew Finn Magill, Laurence Nugent, and the touring Irish dance show Celtic Legends. Novotny also continues to write songs in the country and popular music genres.
Together, Farrell, Connolly, and Novotny promise to deliver an exciting and powerful mix of raw energy, heart, soul, and passion in this live concert performance of traditional Irish music melodies in modern and compelling harmonic and rhythmic settings.
